The April edition of Hearth & Home Magazine gave great coverage to the
Alliance’s Wood Heat Report Card (p. 66-67). Check it out, if you get
the magazine (unfortunately its not online). Clarification: On p. 68
in a Q &A, Richard Wright, the editor asked about the Alliance’s
position on the EPA recommending stoves be held at 4.5 gr/hr in the
new NSPS. At the time, the Alliance thought the EPA would have a
Phase 2 for wood stoves that may lower the number below 4.5 in coming
years. Later we found out that the EPA was not planning on a lower Phase 2 number, partially based on a study by Rick Curkeet that industry liked, showing high variability in emission testing. However, a subsequent paper by Paul Tiegs shows that variability can partially be corrected. We also found out that the EPA is likely to recommend 4.5 gr/hr for pellet stoves. The Alliance is now consulting with allies and
stakeholders about these issues and will make its recommendations to
the EPA soon.
